Datos básicos

Los buques de esta clase se dividían en dos subclases: 32 buques de la subclase Evarts de casco corto y motor diesel-eléctrico, y 46 buques de la subclase Buckley, de casco largo y motor turbo-eléctrico.
Estos buques fueron construidos en USA para la RN estableciendo esta las condiciones mínimas de eslora, velocidad y autonomía que debían tener. El Almirantazgo solicitó buques que fueran capaces de soportar las más terribles condiciones climatológicas, desde el calor tropical al frío polar.

Las fragatas de la clase Captain hicieron una efectiva contribución a las fuerzas de escolta de la RN, formando alguno de los mejores Support Groups del Atlántico Norte y formando el único Grupo de Fragatas de Control Costero, en el Canal de la Mancha y en el mar del Norte.
Su buena velocidad, su radar y su armamento las colocaron al frente de la lucha, y sus pérdidas, muy altas para su corto periodo de servicio, hablan por si mismos.
